“Money Secrets of the Amish” by Lorilee Craker

During the hard economic times of the past year, journalist Lorilee Craker figured it was time to divulge the financial secrets of the elusive Amish.

She conducted her research among multiple Amish homes to discover their tips and tricks to saving cash. Money Secrets of the Amish concludes her findings.

You will learn how the Amish:

  • Use it up and wear it out
  • Delay gratification
  • Pay on time
  • Rethink gifts
  • Repurpose and reuse
  • Shop secondhand
  • Buy in bulk
  • Barter

Although these points are great money saving opportunities, I would not say they are Amish “secrets”. I can guarantee most of you are already practicing at least one of these on the list, which means they line up more with common sense.

I also felt this book was written in a hurry, with money saving tips thrown around in a non-coherent way. It would be easy for a reader to become overwhelmed and discouraged at the amount of “must-do” information.

While saving money is an honorable venture, it can also become an idolized hobby, (Think: Extreme Couponing), and Ms Craker’s publication leaves no room for balance.

I ordered Money Secrets of the Amish to review because I wanted to learn something new.

Sadly, I did not.

Speaking of book reviews, you still have time to enter Susan May Warren’s $200 Visa cash card giveaway in honor of The Shadow of Your Smile. If were hoping for an uplifting review, you might want to go read that one!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from BookSneeze as part of their Book Review Blogger Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
